There are several unique railways around Kyoto that differ from standard train lines. Some are designed for sightseeing, while others provide convenient access to mountainous areas via cable cars. These railways are not just for transportation—they offer an exciting experience in themselves. In this article, we introduce three distinctive railways: Eizan Cable & Ropeway, Iwashimizu-Hachimangu Sando Cable, and Sagano Romantic Train .


1. Eizan Cable & Ropeway

A combination of Japan’s longest cable car and a ropeway that takes you up to Mount Hiei.

  • Route: From Eizan Electric Railway's Yase-Hieizanguchi Station, walk a few minutes to the Cable Yase Station of the Eizan Cable. Transfer to the Eizan Ropeway to reach the Mount Hiei Summit Station.

    • The Eizan Cable is 1.3 km long with a vertical rise of 561 meters, making it the longest cable car in Japan!

  • Route: Board the cable car at Keihan Main Line’s Iwashimizu-Hachimangu Station and ride up to the shrine’s station at the top.

    • Although only about 400 meters long, the ride offers a thrilling ascent up the steep mountainside.
