Kyoto has several train lines that make sightseeing and traveling around the city easy. This guide introduces the main railway lines in Kyoto, highlighting their features and how to use them effectively.


1. Kyoto Municipal Subway

Kyoto’s subway system consists of two lines: the Karasuma Line and the Tozai Line.
  • Karasuma Line: Runs north-south, connecting major areas such as Kyoto Station, Shijo, and Kitaoji.
  • Tozai Line: Runs east-west, providing easy access to Nijo Castle and the Yamashina area.

Both lines are essential for sightseeing and are widely used by locals as well.



2. JR Lines

JR operates several railway lines centered around Kyoto Station, providing access to various destinations.
  • JR Nara Line: Ideal for visiting Fushimi Inari Taisha and Uji.
  • JR Sagano Line (San’in Main Line): Convenient for traveling to Arashiyama and Kameoka.

It’s also convenient for transfers to the Shinkansen.
